Montmartre

12 June 2018 ,

Before being re-attached to the city of Paris in 1860, Montmartre was an independent municipality which name comes from the old French “martre” which means “martyr”. The district is named after the martyr Saint-Denis (first bishop of Paris) who, victim of the anti-Christian persecutions, was beheaded on the hill. The legend says that Saint-Denis after being beheaded, would have got up, his head under the arm, and would have walked for 6km, given his head to a pious young person and collapsed at her feet.
