The Sainte Chapelle is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. It was built in only 7 years to house the Christian relics at the request of King Saint Louis. The Chapel is made up of 1113 impressive stained glass windows, divided into 15 windows of 15m height.
We will first discover and admire the Sainte Chapelle from outside. We’ll talk about the history of the construction of this palatine chapel built on the Ile de la Cité at the request of Saint Louis, in order to host the Holy Relics. We’ll take a closer look at this unique architecture built during the 13th century and its influences through time.
We will then enter this architectural jewel to explore the two levels of the chapel: the lower chapel and its walls marked with the royal seal; the upper chapel and its gigantic stained glass windows covered with religious messages that we’ll decipher together. It is its immense original stained glass windows that make the Sainte-Chapelle so rich today, because it was deprived of its relics during the French Revolution, and thus lost its main reason for being.
So, are you ready to discover this architectural jewel witness to Paris medieval history ?
