Eiffel Tower

29 May 2018

Down from its 324 meters, the Eiffel Tower is since its construction, one of the most symbolic monuments in the world and the most visited payed monument in the world with 7 million tourists visiting the Tower every year.

But, did you know? If Gustave Eiffel’s grandfather would’nt, at the beginning of the XVIIIth century, have changed his name, taking the name of the region Eiffel in its native Rhineland, the famous tower would have been called the tower … Boenickhausen.

During the World Fair of 1889, a large-scale competition was launched through the Gazette. The stake was to study the possibility of setting up a 300 meters iron structure over the Champ de Mars. It was Gustave Eiffel’s project which was chosen among other 107 projects. The construction then lasted two years, two months and five days.
Since its opening, the visitors can reach three floors of the Eiffel Tower thanks to elevators built at the time, a real exploit of engineering. Accurately protected, although its installation had to be only temporary, this exceptional architectural inheritance testifies even today of the Gustave Eiffel’s legendary vision.
