Have you ever been to the catacombs? In Rome perhaps? Well, the catacombs in Italy and those in Paris are a bit different. In Italy they are the first tombs of Christians, therefore dating back to antiquity. The Catacombs of Paris though had two functions through centuries: first a quarry, then an ossuary… Curious? I’ll tell you everything during your visit!

Find your guide at Place Denfert-Rochereau where we will access the catacombs by going down 131 steps. I will tell you the history of the quarries under Paris, and how this place was transformed into an ossuary during the old regime. We will then walk along the paths of the ossuary to discover unusual and fascinating facts. Discover the history of these six million bones and this unique place that are the catacombs of Paris. This moment will feel like being out of time!

Please note that the exit is at 36 rue Rémy Dumoncel.

  • The height under the vaults is 1.80 metres.
  •  There are 131 steps to go down and 112 steps to go up.
  • The visit is not recommended for people suffering from cardiac or respiratory insufficiency, sensitive people and unaccompanied children.
